Brown Turkey Fig Tree

Alternative Views:

Brown Turkey fig tree, Ficus carica 'Brown Turkey Improved' is confused by some mailorder nurseries who have renamed it with various cultivar, invented epithets such as:  'Texas Everbearing Fig', 'Chicago Hardy Fig' and “Alma' fig trees.  The Brown Turkey fig is believed to be the most cold hardy fig tree and has experimentally been planted in many Northern States like Illinois, New York and New Jersey.  Fig trees planted there will freeze to the ground, and the cold hardy roots resurface and sprout  in the spring, and during mild winters will produce enough new wood that supports a crop of figs the following season.  The color depth progression, and the ripening in the  Brown Turkey figs development is influenced somewhat by the temperature and the amount of light impinging on the ripening  fruit, so that the same Brown Turkey when ripened in New York may be bronze, but the same fig tree will be perceived as light brown figs in Tennessee.  The red-pink color of the fig pulp is variable also.
