English Walnut Tree

Alternative Views:

The English Walnut tree, Juglans regia, is commercially one of the most important nut trees that is planted in large orchards in the Western United States, where the industry was pioneered by the famous botanist, Luther Burbank, in California during the last century.  The English walnut trees originated from walnuts found in Persia (today, Iran), and the early walnut hybrids were known by Burbank as Persian Walnuts, then he changed the name to English walnut tree hybrids.  These English walnuts had shells that when mature were brittle and relatively easy to crack with a delicious straw colored kernel inside with a distinctive taste, milder than other cultivars of walnut.  Most often the kernels shelled out in perfect halves, and that made them have a special appeal to the consumer at the grocery stores.
