Kieffer Pear Tree

Alternative Views:

The Kieffer pear tree, Pyrus communis x Pyrus pyrifolia 'Kieffer' is a very old, hybrid, pear tree cultivar that produces very large fruits that are hard with some grit-like cells, that lead some growers to call the Kieffer pear tree, a 'Sand Pear'.  This pear tree is very cold hardy and can be grown in most States, but only requires about 200 chill hours to produce a crop. Since the Kieffer pear texture is hard, it is not eaten fresh very often, but the Kieffer per is excellent for cooking into a pear pie, pear cobbler or pear preserves.  The pear ripens late in the season, remaining on the trees for months, making it an excellent draw for wild animals like deer, game birds and many other wildlife animals.  The Kieffer pear tree flowers in March, and the pears begin ripening late in October and grow to enormous sizes at old farms and homesteads, where they still bear reliably every year.
