Saw Palmetto Palm Tree

Alternative Views:

The Saw Palmetto palm tree, Serenoa repens, is a native palm tree that grows into a dwarf plant or shrub, only growing to about 4 feet tall, looking more like a shrub than a tree.  The Saw Palmetto palm tree is commonly found growing in the sand dunes along beaches, where it is very salt water tolerant and found to be firmly established anchored underneath the shade of other trees, but the leaves are so dense and shaded that few other plants can grow beneath the Saw Palmetto dwarf palms.  This palm sends out rhizomes that grow outwards from the mother fan palm tree and form evergreen thickets that are armed with sharp spines and thorns that will leave anyone traipsing past with a wicked reminder to beware of these palms the next time that they are walking on the beach.  For years this plant has been marketed as a cold hardy palm plant, but nurseries this past year (2014)  found that these palms were frozen out even in many zone 8 locations, so the cold hardiness of this palm tree is being reviewed and questioned as an unlikely palm tree to be sold in the future by many mail order nurseries that have been previously offering free palm tree replacements.
