Shagbark Hickory Tree

Alternative Views:

Shagbark Hickory tree, Carya ovata, produces a cluster of nuts that are surrounded by a very hard shell.  The hickory nut kernel is very sweet and delicious to eat, much like the pecan, but with more oil imbedded with a rich spicy flavor.  The shagbark hickory tree at maturity (10 years old), begins to produce nuts that are a favorite of people and especially wildlife animals, and the mature hickory tree grows bark that is distinctively shaggy in appearance, and the trees with their long tap roots grow better in neutral or slightly alkaline (higher pH) soils, rather than acid soils.  The shagbark hickory tree easily hybridizes with the pecan in the wild, leading to the production of a Hican tree.  In the Southern States the shagbark hickory grows a long taproot in wet soils, and the wood is very popular to use for smoking meat and grilling other foods.
