The Sweet Gum shade tree is one of the most important hardwood trees that is grown commercially in the United States.  The Sweet Gum trees are a native tree that is found growing in forests from Connecticut to Florida in the South and Texas in the West, and grows best in an acidic pH soil profile.  The Sweet Gum tree has 5 pointed, star-shaped leaves that are evergreen in the Deep South, but change into a broad palette of colors, yellow, red, orange and purple during the fall frosts in Northern States.  The fragrant gum that is present in the leaves, bark and roots is divinely aromatic, and during the Colonial American period was extracted from the trees like turpentine, and exported in barrels to European merchants.
