Bird of Paradise

Bird of Paradise flowering plant can bloom with orange-red flowers with a purple-blue beak (Strelizia reginae), and white & blue flowers of the white bird of paradise flowers (Strelizia nicholai). In southern climates, the bird of paradise plant forms small tropical looking trees popular in motel Florida landscapes that look like massive banana trees or palm trees. The bird of paradise trees can be abundantly grown and seen in Dayton Beach, Florida. The orange-red flowers of the bird of paradise, Strelizia reginae, are not fast growing or fast flowering plants, but once flowering begins, the blooms last for weeks and rebloom if used as cut flowers. The bird of paradise plant can be easily divided by separating with a knife. Bird of Paradise plants will survive frosts in outside landscapes in zone 9-11 and are handily grown inside in pots of homes and greenhouses. The bird of paradise is named because of the flower bloom's tropical shape of a bird head and beak. Bird of paradise bulbs bloom better with more flowers when cramped in pots or growing rootbound in pots.
