The Ginkgo shade tree, Ginkgo biloba, is a useful urban street tree that is very adaptable to most soil profiles, and Ginkgos are cold hardy for most USDA climate zones.  Ginkgo trees prefer to grow in acidic soils (pH 5.0 to 5.5), and as growing young trees tend to grow into a cylindrical form that with aging, the lower branches develop horizontally and elongate to form a triangular pattern of growth as the tree matures.  The Ginkgos are long lived with some specimens exceeding l500 years of age.  The Ginkgo tree can grow to over 150 feet tall, and this tree is often referred to as the, 'Living Fossil' tree, showing its great survival characteristics.   The Ginkgos that were growing within the atomic bomb blast area in Hiroshima burned to the ground level but lived, whereas most other living things were killed.  The Ginkgo tree is known for its spectacular leaf color change to a brilliant yellow in the fall with its beautiful, uniquely fan-shaped leaves.  Many Ginkgo tree  root extracts are available for sale at local pharmacies with claims of medicinal value, one claimed remedy is as a preventative of Alzheimers' Disease.
