Loquat Tree

Alternative Views:

Loquat trees, Eriobotrya japonica are evergreen trees that are stunning landscape specimens that flower during the early winter months, and the fruit begins to ripen in March, and then intermittently ripens over several months.  The leaves of the loquat trees are large, much like the Magnolia, and the branches are very dense and resistant to rotting.  This Oriental tree from China and Japan is often called the Japanese Plum tree in the Southern States of Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana, and the trees are grown from the seed commercially, since most grafted loquat tree cultivars are unsatisfactory to diddle with.  The loquats are produced in large clusters similar to grapes and develop a yellow fuzzy skin that is easily removed when washed before eating.  Inside the loquat fruit that is oval or round shaped is a delicious sweet pulp, with a tropical sweet flavor that is very similar to the taste of an over-ripe peach.  In the middle of each loquat is a large brown seed that can easily be grown into a bearing sized loquat tree.  Loquat trees produce a mysterious battery of aromas, as the loquats begin ripening on the tree, and the sweet, fruity, complex mixture stimulates the senses enough to tempt everyone to sample this exotic, exceptional fruit.  The loquats are normally eaten when freshly picked from the terminal twigs, but can be cooked into an ultra-sensitive flavored marmalade requiring no addition of pectin.
