Sassafras Tree

Alternative Views:

The Sassafras tree, Sassafras albidum, is an important native American shade tree that is fragrant in all of its leaf, wood and root parts.  The Sassafras tree is unusual in having leaves that have three different shapes, contrasting to that uniformity of most tree leaf shapes.  Sassafras trees can grow normally up to 50 feet tall and are found commonly growing along fence rows in wetlands with a great adaptability for most soil profiles but cold hardy enough to survive the winters in most areas of the United States.  The fragrant oils found within the Sassafras trees have found wide usage, one being in the production of root beer, perfumes.  The Sassafras oil is flammable, and the wood is usually used to easily start fires.  In Colonial American during the 1700's, Sassafras tree wood was the second most important export product, just behind Tobacco, to England because of its aromatic qualities.
