The famous Sylvester Palm tree, Phoenix sylvestris, is planted all over the South, and the slender trunk is more desirable to some gardeners than the thick trunk of the Canary Island Date Palm.

The leaves in the canopy of the Sylvester Silver Date Palm Tree are beautifully delicate and graceful, described best as bluish-green and silverish.

The Sylvester Palm, Phoenix sylvestris, is slow growing and clean in habit in landscape gardens. Nursery grown Silver Date Palm Trees are easily transplanted, but wild date palm trees from hybrid wildlife habitats do not easily survive transplanting.

The silver Sylvester Date Palm Tree is also called the "Wild Date Palm Tree" and has been widely planted in Southern states, where it grows near other phoenix date palm trees.

Silver Date Palms have hybridized somewhat with wild seedlings and were spread by wildlife birds that planted the hybrid seed in the wild, especially in Florida, where these variable hybrid wild date palms are extensively now being found.

The Sylvester Palm Tree makes slow growth and is salt water tolerant, and perfect to plant for shade and landscape garden areas. The Silver Sylvester Wild Date Palm Tree is less tolerant of frosts and freezes below 28 degrees F than the Canary Island Date Palm Trees, but more cold hardy than the Pygmy Date Palm Tree.

When compared to the leaves of the Canary Island Date Palm, the Medjool Date, or Pygmy Date Palm leaf colors. The Sylvester Palm Tree is native to the U.S. and grows wild in Southern states.
